Information about UKRAINE Ukraine was once the centre of the first Slavic state, Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe. It was also home to the kazaks (Cossacks), a Turkic word meaning outlaw, adventurer or freebooter. Since its inception, the country has rarely enjoyed peaceful times, with many outside forces battling to control this strategic location. However this has left cultural and historical riches for the modern traveller. The country rewards visitors with hospitable people, magnificent architecture and miles of gently rolling steppe. Nearly every city and town has a centuries-old cathedral, many examples of Gothic, Byzantine and Baroque architecture and many have open-air museums of folk architecture, caves stuffed with mummified monks, and exquisite mosaics wherever you look The best prospects for hiking, trekking and camping are in Crimea and the Carpathians in the south-west. Boat trips down the Dnipro from Kiev to Odessa are a fun and relaxing way to see the country. The country is now divided along pro-Western and pro-Russian lines and its transformation since independence has not been smooth. Ukrainian foreign policy has had to play a delicate balancing act between these two influences. It relies heavily on Russia as an export partner, however closer integration with Europe is seen as the way to reform. Once the most important economic component of the former Soviet Union, producing about four times the output of the next-ranking republic, Ukraine is now striving to once again put this potential to good use by pushing through many social and economical reforms.
